What is the difference between true and modern country?

Modern country has more pop and rock influences. Shania Twain (who was more pop than Taylor Swift) was seen as modern country, and some people seemed to be influenced by her and they followed her country/pop format. Of course the influences were already starting to show, but Shania made it big.
